United Nations marks 75th anniversary with renewed commitment to multilateralism

21 Sep 2020 -  The United Nations held a special ceremony today marking the 75th anniversary of the Organization’s founding. Convened largely virtually in order to observe safety measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the milestone was marked under the theme, 'The Future We Want, the UN We Need: Reaffirming our Collective Commitment to Multilateralism'. The commemoration offered participants the opportunity to look back on the UN’s history since its founding after the Second World War, and ahead to the challenges of the future. Member States adopted a Declaration expressing their belief that today’s challenges can only be addressed through “reinvigorated multilateralism.” They also invited the Secretary-General to report back within a year on advancing the world’s common agenda.

Reminds me of the Sussex Conversarion in 2017, on the panel were chemist Professor Sir Harry Kroto, the former Secretary of State for International Development, the Rt Hon Clare Short, and Dr Alison Evans of the Overseas Development Institute.
The respondents from the University of Sussex were economist Professor Alan Winters, migration expert Professor Richard Black and Martin Todd, Professor of Climate Change. The theme was global politics, economics and the environment. In the summing up, the panellists agreed there were solutions to the global issues of poverty and climate change but were profoundly pessimistic about the political will to bring them about. We must hope that the pandemic and drastic effects of climate change will trigger a shift to long term planetary thinking. Elections must be fought on global issues. We are inextricably connected now and must make sure our representatives, whether elected or not, use that connection for our common good.
