GPE is a multi-stakeholder partnership and funding platform that aims to strengthen education systems in developing countries in order to dramatically increase the number of children who are in school and learning.
GPE brings together developing countries, donors, international organizations, civil society, teacher organizations, the private sector and foundations.
What we do
We build stronger education systems
GPE supports developing country governments to develop good quality education sector plans. Governments take the lead in planning and are accountable for delivery; GPE enables needs analysis, works to strengthen technical capacity, and brings in the talent and resources of all partners.
We support countries with the greatest needs, and the children and youth most often left behind
GPE supports nations with high numbers of out-of-school children and weak school completion rates. Also, GPE focuses on reaching the children that are most marginalized and vulnerable including girls, children with disabilities, and those who live in countries that are characterized by extreme poverty and/or conflict. Almost 50% of GPE funds go to countries affected by fragility and conflict.
We mobilize more financing for education
GPE mobilizes financing from public and private sources around the world and encourages developing country partners to provide sufficient domestic financing for basic education. In the last 10 years, GPE directly invested more than US$4.9 billion in education in developing countries. Also, GPE grants strengthen education systems to improve equity, quality, and learning, with 30% paid only if specific targets are reached.
We bridge the gap between crisis and development
When countries become unstable, GPE can adapt its approach and allow more flexibility and a faster response to address urgent needs. We aim to have education services restored as quickly as possible while laying the foundation to meet longer-term educational goals.
We share knowledge of what works
GPE enables developing countries to address common education challenges through learning from each other, strengthening technical capacity, and accessing the best technical expertise.
How we work
GPE helps developing countries strengthen their education systems to significantly increase the number of children who are in school and learning.
Building stronger, more equitable and more efficient education systems is at the heart of GPE. Strong education systems can ensure that all children have access to quality education and can serve future generations of children.
How we work in partner countries
GPE's goal at the country level is to strengthen education sector planning and policy implementation. GPE brings together all education partners in local education groups (LEGs), which enable them to contribute at all stages of the education planning cycle, from sector analysis to evaluation.
