Imagine an economy that wasn’t measured on the success of GDP, what would that look like? Join Rethinking Economics and SDG Lab to discuss how you can be involved in this exciting development. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a measure of the economic output of a country, has become one of the most powerful statistics of our time. It has, however, been used in unintended ways, including as a proxy for wealth creation, wellbeing and development. Ahead of the Summit of the Future (SOF) in September 2024, the UN Secretary-General has made a suite of recommendations to address these structural challenges to advance sustainable development, including proposals to develop a universal and comprehensive measurement of progress on sustainable development to complement GDP. Join us for a discussion on valuing what counts, what the UN is doing to advance this topic and how you can influence the discussion. Speakers include: Anu Peltola, Acting Director of Statistics at the UN Conference of Trade and Development Peter van de Ven, System of National Accounts (SNA) Update Lead Editor Trine Schmidt, IISD Strategic Advisor to the SDG Lab, UN Geneva Laurence Jones-Williams, Director of Rethinking Economics International
